What the sources say

Samaná – Sabana de la Mar: the Rough Guides guidebook describes a passenger ferry across the bay between the wharf at Sabana de la Mar and Samaná. The text is undated and no official source currently confirms the operator, timetable or fare, so we do not publish them.

A vehicle ferry, still a plan: the newspaper Hoy reported a proposed port at Sabana de la Mar that would allow a ferry carrying vehicles between Sabana de la Mar and Samaná. It is a proposal, not an operating service.

Cruise ships: the Samaná Bayport terminal at Arroyo Barril began operating in December 2025; according to Diario Libre (10 April 2026), it received 22 cruise ships and around 50,000 visitors in its first season.

What we don't know

We have found no official source giving a current operator, timetable or fare for crossing the bay, nor any published rules on boat trips or jet skis in Las Terrenas. Any crossing should be checked locally, at the wharf or with the port authorities, before you plan your trip around it.

Want us to look into it?

Send a request with:

the crossing you are looking for, from where to where;

the date and approximate time;

the number of passengers and the luggage;

whether you are travelling with a vehicle.

We look into each case and tell you on WhatsApp what we have been able to confirm, or suggest a road alternative. We do not sell boat tickets, and a request is not a booking.

Arriving on a cruise

If your ship calls at Samaná Bayport and you want to spend the day in Las Terrenas, a private driver or a group shuttle are the options to ask about. Tell us the disembarkation time and the latest time you must be back on board.

Safety on the water

Check there are life jackets for everyone, children included.

Do not board an overloaded boat, and postpone the crossing if the sea is rough.

Never pay a stranger in advance.

In an emergency, call 911. When the 9-1-1 system was launched in Samaná province in 2019, it announced two Navy boats, one in Samaná town and one in Las Terrenas, for coastal and beach emergencies.

By road, in the meantime

To get from Las Terrenas to Samaná, see Las Terrenas – Samaná; for other destinations, browse the routes, the directory and our guides.
