Moto-taxi (motoconcho) in Las Terrenas

The motoconcho, the Dominican moto-taxi, is handy for short distances when you are on your own with no luggage. Before getting on, it pays to know the rules and agree the fare.

What is a motoconcho?

A motorbike with a driver who carries one passenger for an agreed price. In Las Terrenas it is used for short hops: from the centre to the beach, to a restaurant or between neighbourhoods. It is not the right choice with suitcases, boards or bulky shopping.

What the rules say

Helmet: article 157 of Law 63-17 requires motorcycle drivers and their passengers to wear a protective helmet approved under INTRANT standards (Technical Standard 001-2025).

One passenger: Decree 256-20 (2020) limits each motorbike to a driver and one passenger; a second passenger is only allowed with a sidecar.

Vest: the same decree requires drivers and passengers to wear a visible reflective vest or jacket.

Licence: under the decree, only holders of an active licence may carry paying passengers by motorbike.

Children: for children aged 8 to 14 weighing at least 23 kg, the decree requires a helmet adapted to their size.

The official tourism website adds that official moto-taxi drivers usually wear a neon-coloured vest. Rules checked on 4 October 2026 in INTRANT documents; they may change, so check them before you travel.

Reference fares

There is no published fare for Las Terrenas. Nationally, the official tourism website gives RD$25 to RD$75 per ride within a town, depending on distance (undated page). Lonely Planet, in an undated and probably old text, quoted RD$200 to Playa Bonita and RD$300 to Cosón by motoconcho. These are prices per ride, without saying whether the return is included: always agree the amount before getting on.

Getting back from the beach

Lonely Planet says a few motoconchos usually wait at Playa Bonita in high season, but advises leaving before nightfall or arranging another way back in low season. We have no reliable information on night-time service.

Safety tips

Ask for a helmet for yourself and do not ride without one.

Agree the fare before getting on and never pay a stranger in advance.

Hold on to your bag or backpack.

In an emergency, call 911.

Prefer to go through us?

If you would like us to look for a motoconcho for a specific trip or for several days, send a request: we handle each case individually and reply on WhatsApp, with no guarantee of immediate availability.
