Las Terrenas taxi: rides around town and to the beaches
For getting around Las Terrenas and out to the nearby beaches, a taxi is handy when you have bags or children, or are going out to dinner. Here is what to ask, the little that is known about fares and how to request a taxi through our team.

Where a local taxi takes you

Local taxis cover short trips within Las Terrenas and the surrounding area:

The town centre and its beach: according to the official tourism website, Playa Las Terrenas runs along the town centre, between Punta Popy and Las Ballenas.

Pueblo de los Pescadores: once the fishermen's landing place, now a row of seafront restaurants and bars (official tourism website).

Playa Bonita: reached by a paved road that turns off Calle Fabio Abreu, according to Lonely Planet.

Playa Cosón: about a 20-minute drive west of the centre, according to the official tourism website.

El Portillo: a hamlet about 6 km east of Las Terrenas, according to Frommer's.

When a taxi makes sense

A taxi is handy with shopping, children or beach gear, for going out to dinner or for getting back from an outlying beach at a set time. If you are alone with no bags, a moto-taxi is another option; for several hours with stops, see private driver.

Getting back, especially at night

We have found no reliable information on taxi availability at night or on night surcharges in Las Terrenas. Lonely Planet notes that a few motoconchos usually wait at Playa Bonita in high season, but advises leaving before nightfall or arranging your return in low season. The safest approach is to book the return trip at the same time as the outward one.

Fares: what is known

We have not found an official published fare for Las Terrenas. Nationally, the official tourism website explains that city rates are set by the taxi association and recommends confirming the fare to your destination. As an old benchmark, Lonely Planet (undated text) quoted US$15 per vehicle to Playa Bonita, without saying whether that was one way, and US$40 return per vehicle to Cosón: treat that as a hint, not a current price. The fares we publish always show their date and whether they are per vehicle or per person.

What to tell us when you need a taxi

pick-up point and destination (name of your accommodation or the restaurant);

date and time, and whether you want to be picked up for the return;

number of people and bulky items (boards, a pushchair, shopping);

preferred language.

Requests are handled during the team's working hours, so we cannot guarantee an immediate taxi; it is best to ask a little in advance.

Staying safe

Agree the fare before you get in.

Never pay a stranger in advance.

Check that the vehicle is the one you were told about.

In an emergency, call 911.
