The trip

According to Lonely Planet, the village of El Limón is about half an hour from Las Terrenas. It is one of the places linked by the road rehabilitated under the Boulevard Turístico del Atlántico project, which, according to BNamericas, connects Nagua, Sánchez, Samaná, El Limón and Las Terrenas. The trail to the waterfall starts in El Limón.

Options and reference prices

Option

Unit

Published benchmark

Guagua

per person

RD$50 return (Lonely Planet, undated)

Taxi

per vehicle

US$40, one way or return not stated (Lonely Planet, undated)

Moto-taxi

per ride

no published benchmark for this route

These figures come from an undated guidebook and are probably out of date: they help compare the options with each other, not as a current price. The current price is only known once a carrier confirms it.

The waterfall

According to the official tourism website, Salto El Limón is reached by a 2.5 km trail through the forest, on horseback or on foot. Rough Guides reckons on about three hours return by horse from El Limón, and Lonely Planet says the tour with horse, guide and lunch costs US$30 to US$55 per person (undated text). We only handle the ride to El Limón and back, not the tour itself.

Which one to choose

Taxi: for several people, children, or if you want to be collected at a set time after the waterfall.

Moto-taxi: one person with no luggage. Helmets are compulsory (Law 63-17) and Decree 256-20 limits each motorbike to one passenger.

Guagua: for a tight budget; ask where it is going before you get on, as Rough Guides advises.

Plan your return

Visiting the waterfall takes several hours, so agree a pick-up time in advance or a price that includes waiting. We have no reliable information on transport late in the day, so do not leave it to the last minute.

What to put in your request

departure time from your accommodation;

number of people and children's ages: according to INTRANT, Law 63-17 provides for a child seat up to age 6 and a booster up to 12, so ask for one if you go by taxi;

approximate return time, or whether you want the driver to wait;

whether you are continuing to Samaná afterwards.

Staying safe

Agree the price before getting in and never pay a stranger in advance.

On a motorbike, insist on a helmet for yourself.

In an emergency, call 911.

Request your ride

Send your request: only your WhatsApp number is required.
