El Catey International Airport, in Samaná province, is 23 km from Las Terrenas according to its operator, Aerodom. Here is how to arrange the transfer, what to include in your request and what to check when you land.

The trip at a glance

According to Aerodom, which runs the airport, El Catey is 23 km from Las Terrenas (the source does not say whether this is the road distance). The Dominican Republic's official tourism website puts the drive at about 30 minutes. These are indicative figures, checked on 4 October 2026: the actual time depends on traffic, the route taken and how long it takes you to get out of the airport.

The airport

Its official name is Aeropuerto Internacional Presidente Juan Bosch, in Samaná province, but everyone calls it El Catey, after the nearby village. Wikipedia places it about 8 km west of Sánchez, and Lonely Planet on the highway between Nagua and Sánchez.

Getting to Las Terrenas

Private transfer booked in advance: the driver waits for you at the exit with the agreed vehicle. It is the simplest option with suitcases, children or boards. See airport transfers.

Private driver: useful if you want to stop on the way (supermarket, pharmacy, currency exchange) or continue to another part of the peninsula. See private driver.

Taxi on arrival: we have found no reliable information on taxis available at the airport, and no official published fare to Las Terrenas.

Guagua: we have no verified information on guaguas from the airport. Rough Guides describes Sánchez as the guagua hub for Las Terrenas, but there is little room for luggage.

Road and tolls

The official tourism website presents the Boulevard Turístico del Atlántico (Route 133) as one of the ways to reach Las Terrenas, with a lookout over Cosón Bay. Separately, the Fideicomiso RD Vial publishes a rate of RD$400 for category 1 vehicles (two axles) at the El Catey toll station on the Juan Pablo II highway (checked on 4 October 2026; rates may change). No official source confirms whether the trip from the airport to Las Terrenas goes through that station, so ask whether the price includes tolls.

What to put in your request

flight number and expected arrival time;

adults and children, with ages, and whether you need a child seat;

suitcases, surfboards or kites, bikes;

address or area in Las Terrenas: town centre, Las Ballenas, Playa Bonita, Cosón, El Portillo…;

whether you also need the return trip to the airport.

Arrival tips

Have WhatsApp working when you land (wifi or mobile data) so you receive the driver's message.

Only leave with the confirmed driver and vehicle, even if someone else offers you a ride.

Agree the total price and currency (dollars or pesos) before setting off, and never pay a stranger in advance.

If your flight is badly delayed, message the driver on WhatsApp: the flight number helps, but it does not replace a message.

In an emergency, call 911.

Our team handles requests during its working hours: if you are landing today, write to us anyway, but an immediate pick-up cannot be guaranteed.
