Getting around Las Terrenas: areas, taxis, moto-taxis and guaguas
Updated on October 4, 2026

Las Terrenas is a municipality in Samaná province, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and by the municipality of Sánchez to the south, according to its municipal development plan. The official tourism site describes it as one of the liveliest destinations on the peninsula, known for white-sand beaches and a cosmopolitan feel. How you get around depends on where you are going, how many of you there are and what you are carrying.

The main areas at a glance

Town centre and Pueblo de los Pescadores. Once the main landing spot for local fishermen, in the heart of Las Terrenas, Pueblo de los Pescadores is now a seafront row of restaurants and bars, according to the official tourism site.

Playa Las Terrenas, Punta Popy and Las Ballenas. The town beach runs along the centre between Punta Popy and Las Ballenas; the latter is a wide beach that is a favourite for swimming (official tourism site).

Playa Bonita. A crescent-shaped beach lined with boutique hotels, villas and restaurants: the western end is very calm, while the eastern end has waves and a kitesurfing school (official tourism site). Lonely Planet says it is reached by a paved road that turns off Calle Fabio Abreu.

Playa Cosón. About a 20-minute drive west of the town centre, according to the official tourism site; popular for kitesurfing and bodysurfing.

El Portillo. A hamlet about 6 km east of Las Terrenas, according to Frommer's (undated text), with an airstrip whose current status we have not checked.

El Limón. A village about half an hour from Las Terrenas, according to Lonely Planet, and the starting point for Salto El Limón, reached along a 2.5 km trail on horseback or on foot (official tourism site).

On foot

The town centre, Pueblo de los Pescadores and the town beach are all in the heart of Las Terrenas, so walking between them is an option. For Playa Bonita, Cosón, El Portillo or El Limón, plan on a vehicle.

Local taxi

According to the official tourism site, taxi fares in Dominican towns are set by the taxi association, and you should ask for the fare to your destination to be confirmed before you get in. Nationally, taxi services are regulated by Decree 515-21 of August 17, 2021, and by INTRANT Resolution 001-2021 (INTRANT is the national land transport and transit authority); these rules may change. We found no official published fare list for Las Terrenas. More on the local taxi page.

Moto-taxi (motoconcho)

If you choose a motoconcho, these are the published rules. They may change, so check them before you travel:

Helmet: Article 157 of Law 63-17 (2017) requires motorcycle drivers and their passengers to wear a helmet approved under INTRANT standards.

One passenger only: Decree 256-20 (2020) limits each motorcycle to one driver and one passenger (a second passenger only with a sidecar) and requires both to wear a visible reflective vest.

Licence: under the same decree, only holders of an active public transport licence may carry paying passengers by motorcycle.

The official tourism site adds that official moto-taxi drivers usually wear a neon-coloured vest. See moto-taxi.

Guaguas

According to the official tourism site, guaguas are privately run minivans or minibuses that follow daily routes within and between towns. Rough Guides explains that you flag one down from the roadside, that you should always ask before hopping aboard, and that there is little room for luggage. The same guide describes Sánchez as a transport hub with guaguas to Samaná and Las Terrenas, and Lonely Planet mentions guaguas to El Limón.

See buses and guaguas and the bus and guagua schedules.

For a day in Samaná, Las Galeras or El Limón, or a trip with several stops, a private driver lets you plan the day at your own pace.
